Sathya’s Teacher Gets Stuck to a Chair
Posted December 1, 1995
Here is a funny incident of how one of Sathya’s teachers once got stuck to the chair on which he was sitting. It so happened that one-day Sathya was composing a melodious bhajan (hymn to God), apparently unmindful of what was being taught in the class. The teacher got annoyed and poured forth a volley of questions, to which Sathya gave equally quick answers, showing that He had not been inattentive to the teacher. Still, the anger of the teacher did not abate, and he made Sathya stand on the bench as a punishment.
When the bell rang to announce the end of the class, the teacher for the next class came in, expecting this teacher to yield place to him as usual. But when this teacher tried to get up from his chair, he could not do so because the chair had got stuck to him. So, in a whisper, he told the other teacher what had happened to him. The whisper was, however, heard by the students, and all the boys in the class began to laugh, which made the teacher ashamed of himself.
The teacher who had come in understood the reason for what had happened and, pointing to Sathya standing on the bench, declared, “He is not like the other boys in the class. My honest opinion is Sathya is an Avatar [God in human form]. You ask the boy to get down from the bench and let us see what happens then.” There was no other alternative for the teacher but to tell Sathya to step down from the bench, and at once the teacher found himself extricated from the chair that had been sticking to him. From that day onwards, Sathya was looked upon with great respect by that teacher.
Later, Sathya Sai said that He was not angry with the teacher but indulged in the prank in order to prepare the teacher’s mind to recognise His identity as an Avatar.
