If you keep laddu—an Indian sweet, in your shirt pocket, and forgetfully give the shirt to the washer-man, you will find that the pocket will develop stains when he returns the shirt after laundering it. Likewise, the mind is stained with bad impressions if you allow bad thoughts to enter into it.

God is ready to offer you anything you want, but you must be eligible to receive it—just as a depositor can withdraw money up to the amount of his deposit.  The same rule applies to what you can receive from God.  It depends on the size of your deposit with the Divine.  Then the check of your prayer will be duly honored.
