Be Fearless

In order to be free from fear, you must develop the understanding of who you are. Here is what Swami says:

When you forget yourself, when you forget the Atma, (Soul) you will suffer from fear. When you remember only the world and not God, you will suffer from fear. When you are filled with desires and attachments, you will suffer from fear. When you are deluded by objects you will suffer from fear. On the other hand, when you are immersed in the transcendental reality, you will be totally free from fear, you will never be afraid of anything. Then you will always be abhaya, fearless. Krishna said, “Arjuna, there is only one thing you will have to develop, you need not further develop your vision of the phenomenal world; you need not further develop your mind. You need only to develop the vision of the One which is existing everywhere in everyone. If you know it, and if you remember it, then you will not be subject to this constant cycling between fear and the removal of fear, between bhaya and nirbhaya. So long as you have the deluded perspective that the world is real and made up of separate objects, your vision will be doubled and you will be subject to fear. But when you recognize the truth of the unity of the whole creation, you will be abhaya, forever fearless. A person like you should become a wise man, a stithaprajna, and never again experience fear.”

You become fearless when you keep in your heart of hearts the truth that there is only the one reality existing everywhere, and that one is the all-pervasive divinity. Why should anything ever frighten you? What can possibly make you afraid? Death is really just a kind of joke in this play of life. If the role calls for you to fall and die on the stage, will you, the actor, be affected? What is earth-shaking about the death of a body that is born to die. The body, which is made of the five elements has to be destroyed some day. For the sake of such an impermanent thing why should you worry yourself? “Arjuna, you are not the one who is going to kill, nor will those you fight be killed. The only thing that can be killed is the body. You yourself are the Atma and not the body.” This is the truth that Krishna taught to Arjuna and thereby made him fearless. Fearlessness is a quality that is as vital and important as the life breath itself. It is the foremost of the virtues taught in Gita. The Lord’s command is, “Be fearless! Surrender to Me: Then I will take care of the rest.”

Digest 2

Believe that love is God, truth is God. Love is truth, truth is love; for it is only when you love that you have no fear, and fear is the mother of falsehood. If you have no fear, you will adhere to truth.
